About the Slug Generator

A slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a page, such as /blog/my-first-post. Short, descriptive slugs are easier to share and help people and search engines understand what a page is about.

The generator lowercases the text, removes apostrophes, replaces every run of other characters with a single hyphen and trims hyphens from the ends. Accented and non-Latin letters are removed rather than transliterated, so "Café" becomes "caf". Check the result and edit it if your title uses those characters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a URL slug?

It is the part of a URL after the domain that names a specific page, for example "best-hiking-trails" in example.com/blog/best-hiking-trails.

What happens to accented characters?

Characters outside a–z and 0–9 are treated as separators, so accented letters are dropped. For example, "Café" becomes "caf", so you may want to replace them before generating the slug.

Should slugs include stop words like "the" or "and"?

This tool keeps every word. Removing filler words can make a slug shorter, but it is optional, so edit the result if you prefer.

Is the slug generator free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the slug is generated in your browser.
