Average Calculator
Calculate the average of a list of numbers instantly. Enter your values separated by commas or line breaks to get the average, sum and count, plus the median and range.
Separate numbers with commas, spaces or line breaks. Use a dot for decimals (2.5) and leave out thousands separators (write 1000, not 1,000).

About the Average Calculator
The average, or arithmetic mean, is the sum of all values divided by how many values there are. It is used for test scores, monthly spending, response times, temperatures and almost any set of measurements. The median, the middle value when the numbers are sorted, is shown too because it is less affected by a single very large or small value.
You can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet, since each line is read as a value. Negative numbers, decimals with a dot and scientific notation such as 1e3 are supported. Commas always separate values, so do not use thousands separators: write 1000, not 1,000. If any entry is not a number, the calculator lists it instead of quietly skipping it.
Results are rounded to at most 6 decimal places. The calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript, and this tool does not send what you enter to a Usevanta server.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the average calculated?
Add all the numbers together, then divide by how many numbers there are. For 12, 18, 25, 31 and 14, the sum is 100 and the count is 5, so the average is 20.
What is the difference between the average and the median?
The average is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value after sorting, or the mean of the two middle values when the count is even. The median is less affected by outliers.
Can I paste numbers from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Copy a column of cells and paste it in; each line is read as one number. Remove any currency symbols or thousands separators first.
Why does it say an entry is not a number?
Entries such as "abc", "1.2.3" or "$5" are not valid numbers. The calculator lists them so you can fix them instead of getting an average that silently leaves values out.
Can I use decimal commas like 2,5?
No. Commas separate values, so 2,5 is read as two numbers. Use a dot for decimals, like 2.5.
