About the GPA Calculator
A grade point average summarises your grades as one number. Each letter grade is worth a number of grade points, and courses with more credits count for more. Students use a GPA calculator to check their standing, plan which grades they need, or estimate a GPA for applications before official transcripts are released.
The calculator multiplies each course’s grade points by its credits, adds those together and divides by the total credits: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). It uses this common 4.0 scale: A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7 and F = 0.0.
Grading scales vary by institution and country. Some schools give A+ a value of 4.3, some do not use plus and minus grades, and some weight honours or AP courses. Pass/fail courses usually do not count toward GPA, so leave their credits empty. For official figures, always check your school’s own policy. The calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript, and this tool does not send what you enter to a Usevanta server.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add up the results, then divide by the total number of credits. For an A in a 3-credit course and a B+ in a 4-credit course: (4.0 × 3 + 3.3 × 4) ÷ 7 = 3.60.
What grade scale does this calculator use?
A common 4.0 scale where A+ and A are 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3 and so on down to F at 0.0. The full scale is listed under Grade scale used in the tool.
Why is my GPA different from my school’s?
Schools differ in how they value plus and minus grades, whether A+ counts as 4.3, how they treat repeated or pass/fail courses and whether some classes are weighted. Your official GPA follows your school’s rules.
Can I calculate a weighted GPA?
Not directly, because this calculator caps grades at 4.0. For a weighted GPA, follow your school’s weighting rules for honours or AP courses.
Can I use half credits?
Yes. Credits can be decimals such as 0.5 or 1.5. Rows with no credits are ignored, so you can leave spare rows empty.
