About the UUID Generator
A UUID (universally unique identifier), also called a GUID, is a 128-bit ID written as 36 characters. Developers use UUIDs as database primary keys, request IDs, file names and test fixtures, because they can be created anywhere without a central counter.
This tool generates version 4 UUIDs with crypto.randomUUID(), which uses a secure random source. Version 4 UUIDs contain 122 random bits, so the chance of two ever matching is negligible for practical purposes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a UUID and a GUID?
They are the same thing. GUID is the name commonly used in Microsoft ecosystems.
Are these UUIDs unique?
Version 4 UUIDs are random, and a collision is so unlikely that they are treated as unique in practice.
How can I tell it is a version 4 UUID?
The first character of the third group is always 4, and the first character of the fourth group is 8, 9, a or b.
Are the UUIDs generated on a server?
No. They are generated in your browser with crypto.randomUUID().
