Image Compressor
Reduce an image’s file size by saving it as a JPG at a lower quality setting. Optionally shrink its dimensions too, then download the smaller file.
How to Use the Image Compressor
- Click the upload area and choose an image.
- Set the quality slider. Lower values make smaller files with more visible compression. Optionally enter a smaller width or height.
- Click Process image, check the new file size, then click Download result.
Example
- Input
- holiday.jpg — 4032 × 3024 px Quality: 70%, Width: 2000
- Output
- 2000 × 1500px New file size shown in KB Downloaded as image-compressor-result.jpg
About the Image Compressor
Large photos slow down websites and can exceed upload limits for email, forms and chat apps. Lowering the JPG quality and reducing the dimensions are the two most effective ways to make an image smaller.
The output is always a JPG, so PNG transparency is replaced with a white background. Compressing an image that is already heavily compressed may not reduce its size much. Very low quality settings can produce visible blocks. Your image is decoded and re-encoded by your browser using the Canvas API. This tool does not upload the file to a Usevanta server.
Frequently Asked Questions
What quality setting should I use?
For photos on the web, 70–80% usually gives a good balance between file size and visible quality. Try a few values and compare the file sizes.
Why did my PNG get a white background?
The compressor saves images as JPG, which does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white.
Can the compressed file be bigger than the original?
Yes, occasionally, for example with an already well-optimized JPG at high quality, or a simple graphic saved as PNG. Lower the quality or the dimensions in that case.
Is my image uploaded?
Your image is decoded and re-encoded by your browser using the Canvas API. This tool does not upload the file to a Usevanta server.
